SCIENCE

At Key Stage 3, Science introduces pupils to the fundamental principles of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, building a strong foundation for GCSE-level study. The focus is on developing scientific knowledge, investigative skills, and critical thinking.
Pupils explore a wide range of engaging topics, which typically include:
-
Biology: Cells, body systems, reproduction, ecosystems, and health
-
Chemistry: Particles, atoms, elements and compounds, chemical reactions, and acids & alkalis
-
Physics: Forces, energy, light, sound, electricity, and magnetism
Through practical investigations and hands-on experiments, students learn how to plan, observe, record, and evaluate scientific work. They also begin to apply scientific thinking to everyday situations and develop confidence in using scientific vocabulary and methods.
The KS3 curriculum prepares pupils for the more rigorous content and assessment style of GCSE Science, while encouraging curiosity and an understanding of how science impacts the world.

GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy (AQA 8464) is a double award qualification covering Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, taught from Year 9 and assessed at the end of Year 11 through six written exams (two per discipline). Each exam lasts 1 hour 15 minutes, is worth 70 marks, and accounts for 16.7% of the total grade. Assessment includes a mix of question types and there is no coursework.
The course develops pupils’ scientific knowledge and practical skills, with 21 required practicals (7 Biology, 6 Chemistry, 8 Physics) that are assessed in the final exams. These enhance planning, analysis, and evaluation skills.
Students follow either foundation or higher tier papers, with teacher guidance ensuring appropriate challenge. Grading follows the 9–1 scale, replacing the old A*–G system.
Topics studied include:
-
Biology: Cell biology, ecology, genetics, and more
-
Chemistry: Atomic structure, chemical reactions, environmental chemistry
-
Physics: Energy, forces, electricity, atomic structure, waves, and magnetism
The course equips students with valuable life skills and supports a wide range of future career paths.
